Spider Monkeys - Social Structure

Subgroup composition of spider monkeys is temporary. Usually it's an adult male, adult female and her offspring. Males stay away from females during the forage. Aggression among spider monkeys is rare. Males, though smaller and less in number, are dominant and more aggressive. Sometimes they form coalitions against the larger females and male outsiders. Together the Spider monkey group threatens the intruders by screaming, throwing objects and urinating from the branches. Spider monkeys are xenophobic, especially towards people. They can share their habitat only with other diurnal monkey species, which have different patterns of foraging. Adult spider monkeys groom each other and the offspring.
