Spider Monkeys - Conservation Status
Three species of Spider monkeys (the white-bellied, the brown-headed, and the white-whiskered) are listed as Endangered. They have at least a 20% chance of extinction in the wild within 5 of their generations (about 20 years).
The black-handed and black spider monkeys are Vulnerable. Their risk of extinction is 10% within 100 years. Only the black-faced spider monkeys are considered at Lower risk.
Spider Monkeys - Protection
As spider monkeys need large areas of well-preserved forest, they are considered an indicator species. They can live only in areas containing a high biodiversity of plants and animals.

Spider Monkeys have an uncertain future, unless human behavior changes. Monkeys live in areas where people live. They are killed for their fur and meat that is known as bushmeat or considered pets by farmers. To save these animals people should remember that monkeys are wild and never make good pets. They are loud, messy, and difficult to care for them, and they are aggressive. The Spider monkey behavior is practically impossible to change. They also become sick from not getting the right food and space. Usually in people's homes they lead unhappy and short lives.
Another problem is habitat loss. Spider monkeys live in tropical forests, which are quickly disappearing. To protect Spider monkeys people shouldn't buy anything made from monkey body parts and from rain forest trees. Some rain forest products help protect monkey habitats, as they can only be harvested there. Recycling and buying recycled products also saves spider monkeys and their habitats.
